The Scorpio is an alternative to the Zyper Vertigo system (which uses friction to absorb energy) and uses ripping of stitching or webbing to achieve the same ends. This is thought to be a safe system as it decreases the risk of wrong use and there is nothing to catch that could prevent it working and thus less that could go wrong. Also the ripstitch absorber section is stored in a pocket and is more compact and does not hinder movements. The third short end enables you to clip in short to rest, and to remain closer to the cable when traversing (e.g. horizontal or sloping progression). However if the Scorpio is used in earnest, then it is rendered ineffective, unlike the Zyper which can be re-aligned.
